Description Herbivore manure (giraffe, antelope, capybara, goat, sheep) and bedding straw is collected from Wellington Zoo, blended and shredded and put into piles before being covered with black plastic so that it heats to high temperatures. This hot method of composting kills diseases and most weeds though, more often than not, the weeds that do come up are edible and, at times, useful. Every two days the piles of compost are turned and, after approximately two and a half weeks, the compost is mixed with a small amount of mushroom compost and aged bark fines, and packed into bags ready for use. The end result is a boutique, sweet-smelling, easy to handle, quality compost—high in nutrients. Because we’re one of the very few that actually use manure our compost can’t tell the difference between good plants and bad plants and just makes everything grow.
